Anupam Roy (Bengali: অনুপম রায়) is an Indian singer-songwriter & music director. Anupam works as a solo artist for studio albums (singer-songwriter). As a film music contributor, he works as lyricist, music director & playback singer.

Early days

Born and brought up in Calcutta, Anupam completed his schooling from St. Paul's Boarding & Day School, Kidderpore(Class X) and MP Birla Foundation, Behala (Class XII). He did his graduation in electronics and telecommunication engineering from Jadavpur University, Kolkata. He was the gold medalist of his batch (2004). He used to work for Texas Instruments India, Bangalore as an analog circuit design engineer from 2004 (July) to 2011 (March).

Career in music

Anupam’s initiation in music was mainly through his mother, Madhurita Roy. A trained singer, she taught him the basics. While still in school he took lessons in playing the “tabla” for 3 years. By that time he had started writing songs, mainly in Bangla. He dabbled with his dad’s “bulbul tarang” for a brief period before he finally picked up the acoustic guitar as his primary songwriting companion in the year 2001.

He always felt the need of expressing his thoughts in his own choice of words and musical phrases. That’s how it all started and his ideas about love, life and feelings started getting documented through his songs. After completing his engineering he took up a job but the songsmith in him, kept on creating songs. He kept on attempting to pursue his dream of recording his debut album in Bengali, which he hoped would release someday. Nothing took shape until August 2010, when he suddenly got a break in the Bengali film industry when two of his songs were used in the film “Autograph” by his friend & admirer of his songs (writer/director of the film) Srijit Mukherji. These two “আমাকে আমার মত থাকতে দাও” (Aamake amar mawto thakte dao) & “বেঁচে থাকার গান” (Benche thakar gaan) went on to become extremely popular: Anupam had finally arrived in the scenario and he started getting further offers to make music in films. He then took the plunge and quit his job, taking up songwriting and composing as his full time occupation. He relocated to his home town, Kolkata and there was no looking back since then.

After working in the Bengali film and music industry for 4.5 years and delivering a considerable number of hits, in mid 2015 he debuted in Bollywood with Shoojit Sircar’s PIKU, as a music director, lyricist & playback singer.
